Ray Ozzie Launches Mesh at Web 2.0 Expo!

image Microsoft has really rebooted itself over the last several years.  While most companies seem to never change, and mostly focus on what they have always done well, Microsoft has transformed numerous times since its creation.  In the last several years, Ray Ozzie has really stepped things up a notch at Microsoft since Groove Networks was acquired by Microsoft (A company he formed).  Since Ray Ozzie took over the title of Chief Software Architect from Bill Gates in June of 2006, he has really stepped it up a notch.  Silverlight was a huge hit a few years ago at the MIX Conference.

I’m so pumped for next week Wednesday when Microsoft will reveal details of Live Mesh!  During the keynote on Wednesday, Amit Mital will be revealing more details on Live Mesh.  Who is Amit Mital?  Well he used to be the General Manager of BizTalk, and Live Meeting Web.  He is currently the General Manager of Live Mesh.

“Just imagine the possibilities enabled by centralized configuration and personalization and remote control of all your devices from just about anywhere. Just imagine the convenience of unified data management, the transparent synchronization of files, folders, documents, and media. The bi-directional synchronization of arbitrary feeds of all kinds across your devices and the Web, a kind of universal file synch.”

- Ray Ozzie

Mesh is being launched today, and being previewed tomorrow during the keynote!

Xobni about to be acquired by Microsoft

xobni Congratulations guys!  I blogged about Xobni earlier this year, and since then, I have converted hundreds of people to Xobni goodness.  I love my Xobni, and I find it really hard to use my outlook now without the threaded conversations and file attachment system Xobni offers.  They were one of the original TechCrunch 40 that Michael Arrington blogged about a while ago.  Of all of the companies at TechCrunch 40, when I saw Xobni, I was very impressed!  Very focused, and a very fast product as well.

Bill Gates has publicly complimented the service, calling it “the next generation of social networking.”. So I guess maybe my two cents on the product aren’t as important.  But if you haven’t tried the product yet, just email me and I can send you an invitation.

You can read more details on the acquisition at TechCrunch.

Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack

Microsoft Office 2007 Since the release of Office 2007, more and more people are sending around docx and other Office 2007 files.  While it is better to have Office 2007 so you can edit all the new smart objects and other neat things, you can use the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack to at least read them and perform some basic changes to the files.

The 2007 Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack lets you open, edit, and save files in the new file format used by the 2007 Office system. Even if you haven’t upgraded to the 2007 Microsoft Office system yet, you can enjoy some of the benefits of the new Open XML Format including:

  • Smaller file sizes
  • Improved file recovery
  • Direct access to file contents such as charts and comments

The Compatibility Pack lets you exchange files easily between different Microsoft Office releases including Microsoft Office 2003, Microsoft Office 2000, and Microsoft Office XP.

San Francisco Here I Come! But Wait, There’s More!

Very Tired Lately It’s been a while, but there is a lot going on right now both online and offline in my life!  Next week I will be at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco so that has kept me extremely busy, due to all the work we are putting into a new product we are launching very shortly.  I can’t say much yet other than its a Silverlight / WPF XBAP application that will change the way you think about that old term "CMS".

I’ve always thought content management systems for the web 2.0 world were "broken".  As much as a lot of systems out there tried to make things extremely simple, they all seem to miss the boat completely.  I used to help implement a fairly complex system, Microsoft Content Management Server, and learned fairly quickly that while the system was a fantastic product, it was a little too hard for your typical small to medium sized business’s to adopt.  There had to be a better way.

Make sure you check back next week to for the web site launch, and make sure you sign up for the private beta!  And if you think you have had it working on old technologies, and want to try your hand at Silverlight, WPF, and other cutting edge technologies, apply for a job at Anvil Digital.
