Consider yourself dugg Miguel. Outstanding overview. I was going to do a review on my site comparing Bing and Google, instead I'll be pointing my readers to your post.

I'm stunned that the Bing experience was anywhere as good as G, but hey if this puts some heat on Google it can only be good. I've also been a huge G fan, and while their index must still be unmatched in size, by far, the look of the Bing results have me agreeing that the G results are something of a mess nowadays! –T

Interesting review – seems like the sidebar is basically a set of shortcuts to more refined searches?

Also, as a point of interest, if you'd typed in "Nikon D60" and just hit the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button on Google, you'd also end up on a page with a direct link to the manual for that camera. Only it's Nikon's web site, not Microsoft's/Bing's. Make of that what you will. :)

Great review, can't wait to check out Bing. At times searching Google can be frustrating, to say the least. Given that searching the web is a huge part of my workflow, enhancements to my searches are welcome and refreshing. I am interested to see how it performs when searching technical topics I deal with.

Darren, I don't think most folks use the "I'm feeling lucky" button on Google. That being said, I do understand your point. I think the point Miguel makes is that MS has made searching more usable. Google has not improved their search experience in years, and instead has focused on applications and advertising.

I guess I'll need to see for myself!

I'm wondering how Bing would cope with less popular terms, something that's not a brand name. Some of my searches this week (according to google web history):
"as3 mouse_leave", "vista jpeg2000 thumbnail support", "sociogram software", "Simo Hayha".

Miguel Carrasco said in May 31st, 2009 at 8:07 pm

I tried your searches and it found the right information pretty quickly, and in some cases gave me a nice preview of the information and told me that Somo Hayha was an amazing Sniper with the highest number of kills as a Sniper in any major war.

Also a neat feature (speaking of search history), is it creates a search history right along the left side of your search results which makes it pretty easy to go back to previous searches. You can turn that feature on or off or customize it.

Another cool feature I didn't get a chance to talk about was the customization features built into the smart drop down box as you type into the search box. Google just gives you hints. Bing lets you customize the hints drop down.

It's pretty good. It seems to know what your searching for. That's what makes it cool and gives it a sort of "magic" feel. Check it out on Wednesday and let me know how it does.

Darren said in June 1st, 2009 at 1:35 am

No, I know that most people don't use the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button, and it's mostly just a way for Google to brag about the quality of its search results – after all, it's just saving you an extra click. But that's the thing that strikes me about this comparison: Google's first hit returns Nikon's site, Bing's first hit looks to be Wikipedia.

May just be a matter of personal preference, but on that basis it doesn't look like the quality of the search itself is necessarily improved, even if the user experience is improved. It's not fair to judge this based on a single example, however, so I look forward to trying Bing for myself whenever it launches.

Personally I DO NOT LIKE how Bing has made itself the default search engine on my computer and the usual registry tweaks cannot override it. Any advice as to how to get rid of it would be appreciated.

Something that really irritates me about Bing is that you only get the best experience if you live in the US. Here in the UK, there is much less to attract us away from Google. The Nikon D60 test, for example, doesn't result in any compelling reason to switch search engines. Maybe MS will fix this, but currently I'm feeling, yet again, like the victim of petty, small-minded, US-centric nationalistic discrimination. Damn yanks. Microsoft may be winning some market share amongst 300 million americans. They are cementing their failure amongst the other 6 billion inhabitants of this planet by treating us all like second class citizens. Zune, anybody?

Hey, and I'm a Microsoft fanboy. I wanted to switch.

How do You delete it.There are no search providers and Yahoo was my old one.this bing crap has hijacked my search.HOW DO I DELETE IT and revert back to yahoo as my SEARCH engine.

Bliss said in June 3rd, 2009 at 7:43 am

Hey, good news! My search engine reverted to Google after a couple of days of unsuccessful attempts to get rid of Bing. So maybe it will happen to you too. Just MSN's attempt to strong-arm us into using their new search engine.

Johnston Adams said in June 5th, 2009 at 12:51 pm

On the only basis that this is a microsoft product and practically all of their products are horrid.. I will not use bing. I tried it out, and in contrast to google it is fairly even. The video search is better, but there is a lot of clutter with bing. Google is clean, consistent, and gets to the information. Bing gets to the information but I feel like I'm using Vista, and not the ultimate version. @Darren, @TJ Downes; I use feeling lucky all the time. Generaly speaking I rarely use more than one search even for advanced searches like, "Mac OSX 10.5.7 update conflict iprint 2.2.60034", which bing didn't have the faintest clue as to what I was looking for, but Google found at least relevant information on the third search parameter.
This being said, I believe bing is great for simple searches and POP-data, but for technical information or information in specialized fields I will use google, and wolframs search engine. Also.. it is 2009, if you don't know how to find what you need from google.. I'm not sure if bing will help you.

Yayayaya! I understand your feelings…
Things change; your search result didn't show me the preview of camera; I will still use G for my searches

Jay said in June 13th, 2009 at 10:45 pm

Actually, when u type "Nikon D60" in google, the "manual" part is one of the hints displayed in the dropdown. This saves one more click compared to bing. That being said I still think MS did a good job with bing. I have decided goobing away for now.

Forget Bing. Most of these search engines are all the same. They all provide results for so they can gain market share.

I just saw that Infospace launched a new Search Engine that’s helping The Humane Society and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

Check it out – http://www.dogreatgood.com

Thats the kind of site I like to support. Either way, I still have to find the result I’m looking for no matter where I search and this site uses all the engines in one.

I’m not sure if it will beat either of them, but it makes me feel good to help.

I was very much impressed with Google long before they became the leading search enging they are today. However, Bing is an excellent search tool and it will continue to grow on its users. I have just recently change to Bing as my defaut search engine. The process was gradual. You just don't suddently stop using Google but if you give Bing a chance you will see the light. The problem is that so many Google loyalist are in denial as to how good of a search engine Bing really is. Bing is good enough and will undoubtedly force Google to make some adjustments immediately. The competition between Bing and Google will be great for consumers and I would expect Bing to continue gaining marketshare share.

Choice!!! Is important. I got rid of bing because I was not given a choice…..It does not matter which is better, google or Bing, but I want to make that decision for myself!

Mark B. said in October 30th, 2009 at 9:15 am

Bing is a nuisance. Anything that pops up when i roll my mouse over it is unwanted by me. Then you have no choice but to close the crappy thing in order to read an article.

Hy
I've just got a new computer which had Bing installed as my search engine. I've tried the above and I just can't get rid of it. I can't get rid of the searches in the Bing search bar. Am I doing something wrong. Couldn'r follow the instructions to the letter as clicking on start didn't bring up the connect to option. I'm on windows 7 does that make any difference
Thanks mariainuk :-)

Bing is an attempt to provide users with the information that they want, paired with a more pleasant user experience. They have placed their area of focus for search in a few areas like travel, videos, and dining. While Google still has an incredibly powerful algorithm for all topics, they do lack in the areas of user experience and design. That is where Bing excels in my opinion.
