Excellent post Miguel. You bring up a some good points on the shortcomings of generic search engines. While Web 2.0 has brought us so much personalization in many other areas of the Internet, the search engines still aren’t providing us with personalized results. You may be right; Microsoft may be the only one that could take it to the next level, but I would like to see someone else step up to the plate on this one. A smaller, but up and coming social network coupled with one of the smaller search engines could really blind-side the big boys.

Interesting post. I agree that Microsoft probably has the best opportunity to come out with an alternative to Google. The idea of blending together all my social networks under one umbrella is very exciting. I’ve been waiting for a service that does this for a while. I’ve found that Google is good for most general searches on the internet, but when it comes to applying context, as you say in your post, they do a pretty bad job. Nobody is doing anything better in that sense, so there is no need to switch. Everyone was pretty happy with Yahoo! Search back in the day, until Google came out.

@Duane yeah, it would be great if a startup was able to come up with this…but a startup that wasn’t just going to become another Cuil ;)

You write:

It’s clear that Microsoft has the best software developers, architects, and engineers in our industry working for them.

Ahrem! How is that clear. In my opinion, they do not have the best coding brains out there. They might have some of the best marketing brains out there, which is why thay are capable of stuffing their software down our throats.

On google not having a clue on social network searching, I also tend to disagree. It might not be done yet or incorporated into the search engine. But they did buy orkut, a huge social network application when thinking in number of subscribers, not contries. They are also developing opensocial.

So, I would expect something to come out in due time.

Brilliant post, however, I think many of these ideas have been tossed around before. That is not to say that your expression of the idea brings nothing to the table, but I think one of the primary obstacles have been privacy concerns.

I actually think Facebook is a little bit better positioned to take advantage of the social graph than Microsoft is. I don’t think this will ever happen because their stated goal is to help people “share stuff” (to paraphrase) and a search engine does not fit well into those plans, but they have found a number of interesting ways to digest user data for reporting purposes (see Facebook’s Lexicon app).

One other thing- is Microsoft progressive enough to do something like this? Obviously they need to reinvent themselves a little bit and they showed up late to the search engine party a couple years too late to really have a piece of the pie, but are they poised to compete with the likes of Google, a company that still seems to be setting the standard for online innovation?

Presenting another side of the argument though, and using one of you examples from above, if a company comes out with a search engine that is clearly head and shoulders above Google’s there could many advertisers and webmasters choose that company (mass exodus unlikely though). But since advertising is how Google makes their money and they will likely guard it fiercely, who knows what they could come back with? Would be exciting to see what kind of innovations would be introduced through such a competition.

What if I don’t want to be “plugged in” to the plethora of social networking sites out there? Will I be left out or be forced to create a profile at 9000 different sites so the search engines know what I want to search for? I defintely agree that Google’s algorithm is a little archane and your solution is a step in the direction, but I think a consolidation of personalization and social media is what is needed first. So I can create my profile one time and one time only and use it anywhere I go (also choosing to not use it). But then again, I don’t want the triple W search engines, or anyone else for that matter, tracking my every movement and knowing what I’m doing all the time. I think the biggest issue is the languages and protocols used to power the triple W, mainly HTML and HTTP. Until there’s a more elgant solution, search engines will be at the mercy of the content creators and page rank will continue to be a contest fo clever copy writers.

If you want the net to control your life go ahead with the above. Sorry not for me. When a search engine will know my likes an dislikes and then decide what it thinks is best for me then it's time to say goodbye to the net.

I agree with you on the point that Amauri can be very static at times, I actually prefer Trezeguet to Amauri. As for the defense, Nike Air Force 1 07 neutral grey black university blue I think Juve should convince their older players to move on and finish their career elsewhere.
